We regret the passing, on April 11, 2024, of the distinguished Romanian author and critic Dan Cristea, who served as the editor in chief of the Luceafărul de Dimineață cultural monthly. In addition to being an alum of the 1985 Fall Residency, Cristea received his PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Iowa.
Bina Shah, a Karachi-based novelist and alumna of the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa, shares her thoughts about the power of literature to transcend borders. "To have 10 weeks to travel to another culture... and be with 30 plus other writers from all over the world, gave me such a sense of fellowship," Shah says. "It made me again believe in what I do as a writer." Today Shah is a contributing writer for the International New York Times. Her new novel, "A Season For Martyrs," will be published in November 2014 by Delphinium Books.
