My City, Bombay vs. Mumbai

Bombay, India [I prefer to use the older name, ‘Bombay’, as it symbolizes the inclusive and cosmopolitan character of my city; the name ‘Mumbai’ was imposed in 1995 by a right-wing provincial (in every sense of the word) government, and is associated with a nativist, majoritarian ideology steeped in regional and linguistic chauvinism. The claim that ‘Mumbai’ is the original name of the city is questionable, since the city originated in a Portuguese outpost later ceded to the British, and ‘Bom Bahia’ or ‘Bom Baim’ might equally provide an origin for the toponym.]
