Emeritus professor Nieh Hualing Engle (聶華苓), novelist, translator, editor, and the co-founder, with Paul Engle, of the International Writing Program (IWP), passed away peacefully in her remarkable home in Iowa City on October 21, 2024, at the age of 99. Until only a few years ago, she was an active and vivid presence in the IWP’s planning and a gracious host for the Sinophone writers visiting Iowa City as members of the Program’s fall residencies. The IWP will share and celebrate more about her remarkable life and career in coming days.
