"There are no festivals like those of Handigaon" is a popular saying, reflecting the many festivals that occur in this neighborhood throughout the year. The area was known for its pottery ("handi" is a fired pot), has an old Krishna Temple in the roots of an ancient peepul tree, and a Saraswoti temple that dates back to Licchavi times. This video features one day in the Gahana Pokhari jatra, where multiple chariots are dragged into a small pond where a princess wearing jewelry is thought to have drowned--leaving all her jewels strewn across the bottom of the water. The yearly chariot festivals aims to retrieve the mythological jewels.
